A positive attitude paves a path to success
Let us be brutally honest; there is no shame in admitting that you never thought you would be surrounded with so many negative vibes from all angles all at once. I think we all agree that it has been increasingly hard for even the most optimistic of characters amongst us to stay positive faced with this global crisis like no other. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, there is considerable uncertainty about what the economic landscape will look like as we emerge from this lockdown. This crisis makes the Great Lockdown the worst recession since the Great Depression, and far worse than the Global Financial Crisis. Faced with all the adversity, it is critically important to decide to be positive every day. This mindset will give you the upper hand when it comes to dealing with all the adversity and rising above it all.
We can for the first time truly connect and experience all the emotions of the popular idiom which states "To pull the rug out from under someone.” We are all adjusting to rapid changes that have appeared out of seemingly thin air.
Adversity is a part of life which everyone will experience during their lifetime. However, the success of life depends mainly on their response to the difficulties encountered in life. A positive mindset and attitude towards adversity is the key to success.
How do we define a positive mindset and attitude?
"Positive thinking is a mental and emotional attitude that focuses on the bright side of life and expects positive results."
Attributes of a Positive Mindset:
- Integrity –
The quality of being honest with strong moral principles. To have a "wholeness" of character with unwavering values.
- Optimism –
The willingness to make an effort and take a risk, rather than assuming that your attempts will be unsuccessful.
- Acceptance –
Acceptance allows you to learn from your mistakes and maintain perspective, forgive yourself, and move on. To quote Maya, Angelou wise words. "We find our path by walking it."
- Resilience –
Resilience allows you to rebound from adversity to overcome obstacles. It the emotional strength of the positive thinker which redefines problems as opportunities to solve.
- Gratitude –
Gratitude is the keystone characteristic of a positive thinker. If we're mindful, we can think of countless things to be genuinely grateful for every day.
- Mindfulness –
Is the ability to regulate emotions, decrease stress, anxiety and depression. The power of your thoughts can help to manifest the life of your dreams or draw you closer to your greatest fears. The world's most enormous supercomputer cannot compete with the processing power of the human brain.
How do we define success?
We cannot define success and give it a specific definition since success has a different meaning to all of us. To learn the meaning of success, you need to determine your goals, the things you want to achieve in life. You will need to discover the things that make you happy and then leap into faith to achieve them. If you have accomplished what you set out to do, your definition of success, then by definition, you are successful. It is your journey; choose to pave it with positive thoughts. You will find yourself surrounded by like-minded individuals who will fuel your success. Positivity is contagious and who does not enjoy some good company on a "road trip" through life.
The impact of positive thinking on the human brain:
Every thought releases some chemical. When we generate positive ideas, you're feeling optimistic, cortisol decreases, and the brain produces serotonin, creating a feeling of well-being. When serotonin levels are normal, one feels happy, calmer, less anxious, more focused and more emotionally stable (Scaccia, 2017). Dopamine is also a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward system and pleasure centre.
There are four primary chemicals in the brain that influence our happiness (DOSE):
- Dopamine - Involves the chemical that aids anticipation of the happiness feeling.
- Oxytocin - is the neurochemical that has allowed us to become social creatures by connecting to others through empathy.
- Serotonin - Here is a fun fact why serotonin is responsible for your good mood is that 80% of serotonin exists in the gut, and is governed by your state of hunger. That is why food has been labelled a "drug" in its own right.
- Endorphins - Is responsible for masking pain or discomfort, which explains their association with the "fight or flight" response.
Positive thinking is an attainable skill, a superpower that everyone can harness. It is the resolute belief that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. Positive thinking is a powerful tool that can result in benefits for you and those around you, but things don't always go according to plan. The sun does not always shine, and its learning how to respond when the rain comes pouring down.
It is unrealistic to be positive all the time, and if you are an optimist by nature, you should deal with the negative feelings without rejecting them or bottling them up because they also form part of your pathway to success.
A positive attitude is always linked to success since it assists you in exploring possibilities. The motivation and confidence follow it in attempting any seemingly impossible task with the power of positive thinking.
If you see your failures, not as failures but life lessons, you are unstoppable because no one receives an instruction guide on how to deal with life at birth. We need to walk our path and see all the life lessons as an opportunity to grow and rise above any situation you might be facing right now. Choose to be happy and approach life mindfully with a contagious positive attitude which will surely pave your path to success.
